EDINBURG, Texas – Utah Valley found themselves on the short end of an exciting five-set match against UT Rio Grande Valley on Monday night, 2-3 (17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 21-25, 8-15) with three Wolverines hitting over .300% average for a strong fight against the Vaqueros.
The opening set of the night may have gone to UTRGV, but sets two and three were claimed by Utah Valley. UVU posted 16 kills in the 25 points from their side of the court, led by
Kazna Tarawhiti with six kills in the second and four in the third set.
Tarawhiti topped the night for the Wolverines by adding another double-double to her resume with 16 kills and 10 digs, now collecting eight double-doubles in the 2019 season. The sophomore outside hitter posted an even .200% hitting average and also followed up with six blocks at the net.
Four Wolverines posted an above .300% average, including
Kaili Downs hitting .421%,
Megan Childs at .333% and
Makaila Jarema with an exact .300%.
Bailey Christensen tallied 10 kills, followed by
Jasmine Niutupuivaha with eight.
Despite dropping the match, UVU averaged a solid .222% hitting total as a team and 52 kills on the night alongside 16 blocks at the net. The Wolverines also out-dug the Vaqueros, 55-51.
Utah Valley returns to Orem for the last pair of regular season home games against CSU Bakersield on October 31 at 6pm MT, followed by senior night in Lockhart against Grand Canyon on November 2 at 1pm MT.
