BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Two late goals by
Jenna Shepherd weren't enough as Utah Valley University fell short, 3-2, in the WAC opener at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Wolverines (5-6-1, 0-1-0) trailed three-nil with less than six minutes remaining in regulation when Shepherd scored both goal in a span of less than two minutes.
Cassidy McCormick assisted on the first goal, in the 85th minute, and then Shepherd picked up the brace in the 87th minute. Shepherd has scored all three of her goals on the season in the last two games.
"Today's game was a match of crucial moments. We didn't do a good enough job on either side of the ball when it counted most today," said UVU head coach Chris Lemay.
The Runners (6-6-1, 1-1-0) got an early goal from Caitin Goetjen in the third minute of the match to take a 1-0 that they carried into halftime. Eszter Toth made it 2-0 in the 52nd and Aryana Harvey scored what became the game-winner in the 62nd minute.
Utah Valley finished 18 shots, nine on goal, while CSUB had seven shots with five on frame.
The Wolverines return to Clyde Field this week for two WAC contests. UVU hosts New Mexico State on Thursday at 5 p.m. MT and California Baptist on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. MT.
