Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

UVU downs Kansas City to advance to tournament championship

SEATTLE—Katie Haskins, Jocelyn Bybee, and Amber Tripp each fired shots into the back of the net to help lead the Utah Valley women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Kansas City in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday night at Championship Field in Seattle.

Utah Valley (11-8-1)advances to the WAC Tournament championship match on Sunday against host Seattle U. It marks the third time in the past five years that the Wolverines have advanced to the championship match of the WAC Tournament. The Wolverines won titles in both of their WAC Tournament championship appearances.

"I thought it was a solid 90 minutes tonight," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. "I thought we were disciplined. I thought we were mature in the way that we handled the match after going down a goal and then finding a way to claw ourselves back into it. Getting the first goal was big, but getting that second goal before the half was huge. We then weathered the storm in the second half and then having the ability to counter with the goal in the second half was the icing on the cake. We're happy with tonight's performance but we're not satisfied. It's all about recovery and preparation for Sunday's final. We came here to win two games."

Utah Valley fell behind 1-0 in the 28th minute after Lindsey Prokop put a ball over the out-stretched hand of Allie Jara for the score.

The Wolverines answered with an equalizer in the 33rd minute after Heather Stainbrook beat her defender on the goal line and played a cross to the right foot of Katie Haskins, who one-touched it into the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1.

UVU then scored the go-ahead goal with just 2:21 seconds remaining in the half as Jocelyn Bybee followed up a Sadie Brockbank shot off the keeper and put it in the net with her right foot as the Wolverines went into the half with a 2-1 advantage.

UVU gave itself some cushion in the 81st minute after Madeline Moore dribbled the ball past a defender to the goal line of the left side and then crossed it into the box. Amber Tripp then finished from eight yards out with her left foot to give UVU a 3-1 lead with just 9:30 remaining.

Kansas City was awarded a penalty kick in the 90th minute but Jara stopped Rylan Childers attempt to secure the 3-1 victory for the Wolverines.

Utah Valley outshot the "Roos 13-8 on the night, including a 7-4 advantage on frame. Stainbrook led UVU with four shots, including one on goal. Tripp and Haskins each had two shots, while Moore, Brenna DeWaal, Brockbank, and Bybee each had one.

Jara tallied three saves in goal for Utah Valley in 90 minutes of action as she picks up her 10th win of the season.

Utah Valley will now take on Seattle U in the championship match of the WAC Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Championship Field in Seattle. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (MT). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
