OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University ran into a hot Idaho State University squad that hit nearly 60 percent from the field en route to an 88-61 win Tuesday night in the UCCU Center.
With the Wolverines (1-6) leading 4-3 just over two minutes in, the Bengals (4-2) hit five straight shots and eight of their next nine overall to build a 23-11 lead after the opening quarter. Dora Goles hit a trio of 3-pointers in the quarter, including two during a 20-7 run that ended the first.
ISU didn't slow much in the second either, hitting 5-for-6 to start the quarter to build a 38-18 lead. After hitting 16-for-27 (59.3%) from the field in the opening half, the Bengals came out of the break to hit 10-of-15 in the third to squash any Utah Valley hopes of getting back into the contest.
"It's really frustrating to dig yourself a hole like that and not even give yourself a chance. Tonight was really disappointing," said UVU head coach
Dan Nielson. "Credit to Idaho State for running their stuff really well, but we've got to find a way to have more energy, more fight and giving the effort that's needed to win."
The Wolverines got a career-high 12 points from
Nehaa Sohail, who went 3-for-4 from the field and made both 3-pointers she took.
Eve Braslis,
Megan Jensen and
Josie Williams each added eight for UVU, with Williams grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.
Goles led Idaho State with a game-high 19, and finished 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and 7-for-8 overall. Callie Bourne had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Estefania Ors also scored 15 and dished out seven assists. ISU had 27 assists on 34 made field goals in the contest. The Bengals were 34-for-57 (59.6%) overall and 10-for-21 (47.6%) from three.
Utah Valley is back in action on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. MT in Lockhart Arena against the University of Montana.
