LAS VEGAS, Nevada –
Peyton Angulo went a combined 7-for-7 to help Utah Valley University to a doubleheader sweep with wins of 11-3 over Seton Hall and 10-3 against Southern Utah at the Marucci Desert Classic.
Game 1 vs Seton Hall - Angulo was 4-for-4 and
Lyndsay Steverson had three hits, including a home run, as the Wolverines (3-1) run-ruled Seton Hall, 11-3, in six innings on Saturday morning.
Angulo drove in three runs and also scored three times as the Wolverines plated six runs in the sixth – all without having an out recorded -- to end the game early.
Utah Valley split two games to open the season on Friday including the night cap, an 8-4 win over North Dakota before turning around and facing the Pirates (1-2) in the first game on Saturday morning.
"I think today was a really big test to our team's character," commented
Alex Valencia. "We had a really late game last night and then had to turn around and play really early this morning. We battled from start to finish and came out on top. It was a great team effort all around and showed just how resilient this team is."
Trailing 2-0 in the third, Angulo drove in
Brianna Moeller with a base hit and later scored on a
Basia Query RBI on a fielder's choice. Utah Valley took the lead with three more runs in the fourth, two coming on an Angulo double that scored Moeller and
Karleigh Olsen.
After Seton Hall got one of those runs back in the fifth, the Wolverines had nine straight hitters reach base in the decisive sixth inning. Six players reached on hits including Steverson's home run, a two-run shot that also scored Angulo.
Skylar Cook's RBI base hit ended it, scoring
Berlyn Carreon, who reached earlier in the inning on a pinch-hit single to right. UVU had 15 hits in the game.
Devyn Cretz earned her second win in the circle, striking out four in 3.1 innings of relief.
Game 2 vs Southern Utah – The T-Birds (0-3) scored a single run the top of the first for an early lead, but the Wolverines erupted for six in the bottom of the inning to grab control of the contest.
Steverson drove in the first run, scoring Moeller on a grounder to second. The remaining runs all came after there were two outs in the inning. UVU took a 2-1 lead on a double steal with Angulo stealing home and
Linnah Rebolledo swiping second. Carreon later came up with the bases full and drove everyone home with a double to right-center. An RBI single from Cook scored Carreon to cap the six-run frame.
Rebolledo had the first of two RBIs in the game in the fourth to give UVU a 7-1 lead. She finished 2-for-2 and drove in a second run in the sixth.
In addition to her banner day at the plate, Angulo scored six runs – three in each game.
"Today was one of those days that showed us what each other is truly capable of," said Angulo. "Going off of four hours of sleep we could have easily rolled over but we didn't. We came ready to play and battle and that's what we did."
Brylee Mariale (1-1) pitched a complete-game for the Wolverines to earn her first career win.
The Wolverines will finish off the 2019 Marucci Desert classic Sunday morning with a single game against 25
th-ranked Long Beach State at 11:30 a.m. MT.
