SALT LAKE CITY –
Lyndsay Steverson hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning as Utah Valley University won its fourth straight, 5-2, over the University of Utah on Tuesday night.
The Wolverines (11-17) trailed 2-1 in the sixth when
Skylar Cook led off with a double. Later, with two outs in the inning, Steverson hit her seventh home run on the first pitch she saw in her at-bat.
"Today was a great team win," remarks Steverson. "We came in today as the under dogs and were able to fight through adversity. We didn't give up through every pitch."
Utah Valley added two insurance runs in the seventh when
Madison Sisco and
Peyton Prigge hit back-to-back doubles, with Prigge's hit scoring both Karleigh Olson and Sisco.
Devyn Cretz then retired the Utes (13-21) in order in the seventh to secure the win and notch her third complete-game win in her last three starts. Cretz allowed one earned run (two total) on nine hits while striking out three.
Utah took a 1-0 lead with an RBI single from Makayla Hurst in the bottom of the third. The Wolverines tied it in the fourth after
Brianna Moeller hit a leadoff single and later scored on a base hit from
Linnah Rebolledo. The Utes took a brief led in the fifth after a throwing error allowed an unearned run to score.
The Wolverines travel to Las Cruces, New Mexico this weekend for a three-game WAC series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. MT.
