UVU edged, 3-2, in series finale at CBU

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Utah Valley University fell 3-2 at California Baptist in the final game of a three-game WAC softball series at Funk Stadium on Saturday. The result gave CBU the series sweep.

After three hitless innings to start the game, the Wolverines (12-26, 4-11) rallied with two outs in the fourth. UVU got a two-out double from Lyndsay Steverson before a blooper off the bat of Linnah Rebolledo was dropped and allowed a run to score for a 1-0 lead.

California Baptist used a pair of clutch two-out RBI hits to take a 2-1 lead. The Lancers tied it in the fourth on a two-out hit from Makenna Stram and took the lead an inning later on a two-out single from Cheyann Tucker.

Utah Valley had runners at the corners and two outs in the sixth when Berlyn Carreon's infield single scored Abby Doughty, who walked to lead off the inning, and tied the game at 2-2.

The game-winning run came in the bottom of the sixth when Brittany Galvez singled past third, scoring Molly Kolander who came in just ahead of the throw at the plate.

Doughty hit a two-out double to left-center to put the potential tying run in scoring position in the seventh but was stranded there.

Kellye Springstead (18-14) picked up the win for CBU, striking out six and allowing just one earned run (two total) on four hits in the complete-game win. Devyn Cretz (9-13) went the distance for Utah Valley but took the loss after surrendering three runs.

Utah Valley returns home on Monday for an 11 a.m. start against No. 3 Washington at Wolverine Field in Orem. That game starts a six-game homestand to wrap up the home schedule. UVU hosts CSU Bakersfield next Friday and Saturday in the final WAC series of the season.
