OREM, Utah – Taran Alvelo tossed a no-hitter as No. 3 Washington defeated Utah Valley University, 9-0, on Monday at Wolverine Field.
Alvelo was perfect through six innings and three outs away from a perfect game before issuing a leadoff walk to
Brianna Moeller in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alvelo, who ranked eighth in the country in strikeouts entering last weekend's action, struck out 13 batters on Monday and earned her 20th win of the season.
The Huskies (39-7) jumped ahead with three runs in the first behind a pair of RBI doubles from Sami Reynolds and Taryn Atlee.
UVU (12-27) starter
Devyn Cretz settled in over the next three innings, retiring seven straight Huskies during three consecutive scoreless frames.
Washington added two runs in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to pull away. Three difference UW hitters finished with multi-hit games including Morganne Flores, who was also one of three players to drive in two runs.
The Wolverines return on conference play this week with the final WAC series of the year against CSU Bakersfield. UVU hosts the Roadrunners in a single game on Friday at 2 p.m. MT with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. MT.
