OREM, Utah – Devyn Cretz finished off a shutout as Utah Valley University completed Friday's suspended series opener against CSU Bakersfield with a 3-0 win. The game was suspended in the top of the seventh on Friday due to lightning and thunderstorms.
Cretz struck out three and allowed six scattered hits in earning her first shutout of the season. The Wolverines (13-27, 5-11) scored twice in the first and once in the fifth en route to the win.
Brianna Moeller walked to lead off the bottom of the first and was at second with two outs when
Lyndsay Steverson singled her home with a base hit to left-center.
Linnah Rebolledo then tripled home Steverson to give UVU a 2-0 lead after an inning. Rebolledo finished 3-for-3 with a triple, double, single and an RBI.
Cretz got help behind her as well.
Kaylee Bott robbed Karah Wiseman of a base hit to begin the third with a diving play, snagging a rocket up the middle. Then, with one out and a runner at third in the fifth, Cretz took a comebacker, threw to
Madison Sisco at first for one out and Sisco fired home to cut down the runner at the plate to keep CSUB scoreless.
When Saturday's action resumed, Cretz retired the first hitter of the inning on one pitch before Cydney Curran singled with one out. A pop out and soft liner to
Karleigh Olsen at short ended it to strand the runner and preserve the shutout.
The teams will play Saturday's scheduled doubleheader beginning at 12:45pm MT.
