OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University finished off a series sweep of CSU Bakersfield with wins of 7-2 and 8-0 on Saturday. The wins in the doubleheader came after the Wolverines (15-27, 7-11) completed a 3-0 victory in a game earlier in the day that was suspended from Friday afternoon.
After securing the final three outs of the suspended contest to pick up her first shutout,
Devyn Cretz pitched her second straight complete game win in the 7-2 contest. Over her 14 innings in the series, Cretz went 2-0 without allowing an earned run.
Kaycie Jensen, who started the series finale, registered her first shutout in the 8-0 run-rule win in six innings. The two combined to throw 20 innings without an earned run during the series sweep.
"The defense was so on top of things, making key plays, double plays and getting key outs throughout the games. It helped me stay calm and confident," said Cretz. "Once we finished that first game, the momentum was on our side and it helped carry into the rest of the series."
In the first game of the twin bill,
Lyndsay Steverson went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs while
Peyton Prigge came off the bench and went 2-for-2 and drove in three runs.
"I'm always staying prepared so I'm ready to go when I'm called on," Prigge said. "This series really gives us confidence as we go into this last week with Senior Day and then into the conference tournament."
The Roadrunners (14-27, 3-12) took advantage of a pair of UVU errors in the first inning to score their first runs, both of which went unearned. They were the only runs CSUB would score in the series.
The Wolverines got into the scoring column in the third when Prigge delivered a pinch-hit, two-out RBI base hit on a sharp one-hopper to third that scored
Kaylee Bott. Steverson tied it in the fourth with a solo home run, her 10th of the season and 33rd of her career.
Basia Query doubled with one out as Utah Valley rallied to score two more times in the fourth.
Madison Sisco walked before
Berlyn Carreon drove in Query with a pinch-hit single to give UVU a 3-2 lead. After
Brianna Moeller was hit by a pitch, Prigge walked to force in Sisco and make it a 4-2 contest. Utah Valley extended it to 7-2 with three more in the sixth. Moeller and Prigge each had RBI singles and Steverson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in another run.
Cretz' second straight complete game win came on just four hits as she retired the final eight batters she faced – including 14 of the last 15 -- while surrendering just one hit after the second inning.
In the series finale, the Wolverines jumped ahead quickly with two in the first. With Moeller at third and
Skylar Cook at first, UVU executed a double steal of second and home to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Cook scored when
Linnah Rebolledo singled her home.
Query had an RBI single in the third to plate Cook and give UVU a 3-0 lead. The Wolverines finished it off with five runs in the sixth; Prigge had a base hit with one out in the sixth and later scored, along with Cook, when Steverson singled with the bases loaded.
Abby Doughty walked with the bases full to score
Payton Hammond before Bott ended it with a two-run single that drove in Query and Rebolledo for the walk-off win.
The Wolverines finished WAC play with a 7-11 record and are scheduled for three non-conference contests this week before heading to Phoenix for the WAC Tournament May 8-11. UVU hosts Weber State on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. MT and Utah State on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT before the regular season finale at Utah State on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.
