OREM, Utah - UVU's final day of competition in the 2019 WAC Outdoor Track & Field championships proved to be a successful day as the No. 1 projected men became WAC champions, also breaking a long-standing WAC history record in the process. Utah Valley's women, who entered the conference meet projected at No. 4, ended strong as the third-place finishing team.
The Western Athletic Conference held a long-standing record for amount of points won in a conference meet by BYU since 1966. The Wolverines now move into WAC history as the new record-holder in 2019 with a dominating 288 points. UVU out-scored second-place GCU by 98 points and third-place UMKC by 190 points. The UVU women finished with 145.50 points.
In the opening event of the day, junior
Albert MacArthur kick-started the men's conference triumph in the triple jump. MacArthur slated himself a two-time conference champion with a first-place jump of 15.75m (51-08.25). MacArthur's mark put him a full 1.45m ahead of the rest of the men's triple jump competition and is projected to move him into the top 25 nationally. MacArthur claimed both a gold and silver medal for the weekend's events, gold in triple and silver in long jump (7.44m).
Following suit, teammate
Jeffrey Duvinston maintained
himself a WAC champion in the high jump in first-place, clearing 6-09.75 (2.08m) and moves him into fourth all-time in UVU history.
Seth Krauss also had a solid finish in third at 6-08.75 (2.05m).
Brandon Edmondson and
Anthony Ocegueda came in as the number one and number two spot in the men's 1500m run. Edmondson crossed the finish line with a time of 3:53.30, Ocegueda followed at 3:54.64.
Another pair of Wolverines took the top-two spots on the podium,
Andre Jones and
Sean Mcgetrick in the 110m hurdles. Jones finished at the top at a defeating time of 14.42, Mcgetrick coming in just behind in second at 14.44.
Jones took home more than the 110m hurdles, also claiming the 400m hurdles at 51.37. Jones is the first athlete in UVU history to win a WAC title in the 400m hurdles and moves into the No. 2 spot ever in the UVU record books.
Jordan Carder ran away for UVU in the 200m dash, taking gold at 21.12. Carder is only the second athlete in UVU history to win a WAC title in the 200m and has been No. 1 in the WAC all season long for his performance in the 200m race since the opening outdoor meet at UNLV.
Distance-runner
Kevin Lynch held strong in his 5000m campaign, finishing at 15:04.84 and capping the final first-place medal for the UVU men before taking the 2019 WAC title.
In the men's group races
, the 1600m relay, the Wolverines upheld a silver finish at 3:14.65
, which included Carder, Jones, MacArthur and
Seth Dabb. The 400m relay, consisting of Carder,
Aaron Johnson,
Ryan Tenn and
Jordan Peterson, put points on the board for the Wolverines in third at 40:45.
On the women's side,
Briana Dusenberry and
Tiera Orr started the day in the high jump, Dusenberry stating second and Orr finishing third. Dusenberry cleared a height of 5-07.75 while Orr added in at 5-05.25.
Savannah Neuberger and Aisha Graham cleared out the 1500m run, Neuberger victorious at 4:28.11 with Graham following in a second-place finish at 4:28.39. Neuberger and Graham also claimed first and second place spots in the 800m dash, yet switching finishes with Graham on top at 2:08.80 and Neuberger finishing at 2:08.83.
In the final event for the women,
Hannah Branch and
Paityn Chynoweth ran out the 5000m, with Branch crossing at 17:58.95 and Chynoweth at 18:05.90.
The Wolverines now await to see which athletes will make the cut for the upcoming NCAA West Preliminary competition, held in Sacramento, California on May 23-25.
