OREM, Utah – Alec Felix scored the golden goal in the 103rd minute as Utah Valley University won a wild, double-overtime contest, 4-3, over Canisius on Friday night at Clyde Field. Six of the game's seven goals came in the second half and overtimes.
With the Wolverines (2-1-1) holding a 2-1 lead with just over 11 minutes left, the Golden Griffins (1-3-0) tied it, UVU regained the lead, and Canisius tied it again all in a span of less than three minutes.
"We made the match more difficult on ourselves than needed, but I do give credit to Canisius for taking care of their chances," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "I was pleased with the majority of our approach to the match, we had four different goal scorers, but we will need to be much sharper and disciplined come Monday against a very good UC Irvine side."
Canisius got the only goal of the first half, scoring on a set piece in the 11th minute from Julius Schoner to Lachlan Beever.
Six minutes into the second half, the Wolverines tied it when Felix sent a ball that was directed by
Caleb Wight just inside the 18, where
Aidan Dayton scored his first career goal, scoring into the right corner with his left foot. The Wolverines took the lead in the 69th minute when
Zach Maas rebounded and put back a saved shot off the foot of
Luis Vargas. It was Maas' second goal of the season and gave UVU a 2-1 advantage.
The Golden Griffins tied it 10 minutes later on a goal from Federico Mereto to begin the scoring flurry.
Leo Fuchs gave the Wolverines a 3-2 lead less than two minutes later when Dayton played the ball into the far corner to
Aaron Nixon, whose cross right in front of the goal mouth was punched in by Fuchs.
Just 55 seconds later, Jonny Tekie took the ball into the box and his pass was deflected out to Manuelle Cavazzoli, who fired a shot from just outside the 18 for the equalizer that forced overtime.
After the teams played the first extra period without a goal, the game-winner came when
Zahir Vazquez floated a pass into the box for
Luis Garza, whose header was saved, but Felix out-ran the defender to the ball and ended the match with his second goal of the season. Felix and Dayton both finished with a goal and an assist for the Wolverines while Schoner had two assists for Canisius.
The Wolverines will be back on Clyde Field on Monday at 5 p.m. MT against UC Irvine. The Anteaters won at Creighton, 3-1, on Friday night.
