OREM—Utah Valley gave its crosstown rival all it could handle on Monday night, holding No. 10 Brigham Young scoreless through nearly 64 minutes of play before falling to the Cougars, 1-0, in front of a record crowd of 3,952 fans at Clyde Field.
It marks the first time this season that the Wolverines have dropped a home match, falling to 3-1-0 at Clyde Field this year. With the loss, UVU falls to 3-5-0 this season, while BYU keeps its record perfect at 6-0-0. The 3,952 fans breaks the previus record of 3,211 set last season against Chicago State on Oct. 5, 2018.
"There were individual efforts that were good defensively tonight," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "Collectively, we were really good tonight on the defensive side. It's a shame to give up one and lose, but at the end of the day they're a really good team and they are ranked in the top-10 in the country for a reason. We knew that they had weapons everywhere. We just tried our best to keep them at bay."
BYU's Danika Serassio scored the game winner in the 64th minute as she sent a ball from 30 yards out to the left upper 90 just out of the reach of UVU keeper
Allie Jara for the score. Jamie Shepherd was credited with the assist on the goal.
The Wolverines went on the attack after BYU went down a player after Jamie Shepherd earned her second yellow card of the match. UVU had numerous shots that just missed the mark, including a bullet of a shot by
Brianna Hatch in the 72nd minute.
The Wolverines were out-shot 16-6 on the night, but were just edged 5-4 by the Cougars on shots on goal. Hatch and
Amber Tripp led UVU with two shots each. Both of Hatch's shots were on frame. The Cougars had five corner kicks to UVU's one.
Heather Stainbrook and
Sadie Brockbank each had one shot with Stainbrook's coming on goal.
Defensively,
Allie Jara led the Wolverines in the box as she made four spectacular saves.
Katie Haskins helped limit BYU leading scorer Elise Flake to no goals and just two shots on the night. Flake ranks fourth nationally in goals per game (1.20).
Utah Valley will continue play at home as the team wraps up a three-game homestand on Friday against San Diego. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
