UVU pulls out wins over Portland State and UC Davis

OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley volleyball team collected a pair of wins at home over Portland State (20-25, 21-25, 25-12, 25-16, 15-6) and UC Davis (25-10, 25-13, 25-23) in the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Invitational. 
 
    In a first match victory over Portland State, Jasmine Niutupuivaha and Seren Merrill dominated both the front and back row, ending in a thrilling five-set victory over the Vikings. UVU and PSU began set one in a steady tie, but Niutupuivaha gave the Wolverines their first lead of the match with a trio of kills at the net to put Utah Valley on top, 7-5. A battle at the net would put Portland State on top for their first lead over UVU, 12-8. Bailey Christensen delivered three back-to-back kills followed by a solo block, but would prove not enough against the Portland State backline. Utah Valley out-hit Portland State 14-8 but would fall short through the remainder of the first set, ending the game at 20-25.

    Set two put the Wolverines on top from the start and continued a consistent lead over the Vikings, with the largest margin between teams at 18-13. Jasmine Powell kept Portland State within a five-point difference with a monster kill followed by an ace to swing the momentum for Portland State. Kazna Tarawhiti and Megan Childs put together five kills to keep the Wolverines close, but came up just short in the second, 21-25.

    Despite starting off with an 0-2 deficit, the Wolverines battled back in the third to the first set victory over the Vikings. A close game at 12-12, UVU would string together a five-point run to top PSU, 16-12. Utah Valley took the win over Portland State with a 17-9 difference in kills, for a .279% team average. A handful of Wolverines were instrumental in the rally over PSU, led by Christensen with six kills, alongside teammate Niutupuivaha with four at the net. UVU capped the third set victory over PSU, 25-21.

    Utah Valley started strong and capitalized right away in the fourth set, with a monster 6-1 lead over Portland State. A continued lead for UVU would put them in the largest lead of the day at 18-7. Tarawhiti tallied five kills UVU maintained a steady pace of points, ending the match over PSU, 25-15.
                 
    UVU dominated set five with a 4-0 run from the start. UVU would continue the lead with a nine-point cap to take the contest over Portland State, 15-6. Tori Dorius was a force at the front line with four blocks and end the matchup with a trio of kills. Niutupuivaha led the Wolverines with 14 kills against PSU for a massive .591% average.

                 
    Utah Valley then took on UC Davis in a night cap, pulling out the first sweep of the season for the Wolverines, 3-0. In set one, Utah Valley jumped ahead 6-2 over the Aggies and kills from Tarawhiti and Niutupuivaha sent UVU on a 10-0 run, virtually closing set one off from UC Davis at 15-2. Tarawhiti tallied three more kills before ending the set, giving UVU a substantial victory over the Aggies, 25-10.

                 
    Set two followed suit, as the Wolverines went ahead right out of the gate on an 8-0 run over UC Davis for an 8-2 lead. Six of the eight points within the run were off of Wolverine kills, included from Kaili Downs, Christensen and Tarawhiti. UVU pulled together another four-point run soon after, to push Utah Valley closer to a win at 17-9. Outscoring the Aggies 7-2 in the final points of the match led to a Wolverine win in the second at 25-13.

                 
    The final set of the night would draw a bit closer in points between the teams, ultimately ending in a last UVU victory of day on in the Orem-hosted invitational. Utah Valley and UC Davis battled point-for-point, eventually giving the Aggies a slight lead in the middle of the set at 17-19. With UC Davis on top at 21-23, four errors from the Aggies side of the court would notch out the triumph for the Wolverines.

 
    Utah Valley out-scored the Aggies in kills at 39-26, 7-5 in blocks and 40-31 in digs. Tarawhiti led the Wolverines on the day, with 35 total kills between the two matches to mark a .633% kill average against UC Davis and an overall .211% kill average on the 2019 season. Makaila Jarema and Niutupuivaha both collected three blocks against UC Davis and Jaysa Funk Stratton came up big on defense with 12 digs on the UC Davis swings. UVU ends the night of competition with a collective .383% hitting percentage at the net.

    Utah Valley is back in action on Saturday, September 7 against #19 ranked Utah, in a single matchup at 5pm MT.
