NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Utah Valley University and CSUN played to a 2-2, double overtime draw in the Wolverines' first road contest of the 2019 season.
Alec Felix and
Zach Maas both scored goals for UVU, who picked up the point against the Matadors, who sit just outside the top 25 at No. 26 overall.
The Wolverines played a man down during the entire second half and overtimes following a red card and earned their first draw since the 2017 season. UVU (1-0-1) also survived a late call that awarded the Matadors (2-0-1) a potential game-winning penalty kick that hit the crossbar with just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime.
"I couldn't be prouder of the commitment and determination of this team to grind out a result on the road with 10-men for 70'+ minutes," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "We faced a lot of adversity tonight. Injuries, a physical side, and other key moments that seemed to go against us, but we dug-in and embraced the opportunity to further enhance this team's character. We'll now get healthy, and look forward to another difficult match on Sunday at Fullerton."
UVU broke through first when
Mark Brown took the ball into the corner and headed the ball towards Felix into the box, who settled it with his head and scored on a toe poke to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
The Matadors earned the equalizer in the 25th minute, which carried into the second half before Maas scored in the 53
rd minute to give UVU a 2-1 lead. A goal by Johnnny Rodriguez in the 61st minute served as the game-tying goal eight minutes later.
Utah Valley will face Cal State Fullerton, 2-1 winners over Loyola Chicago Friday night, at 8 p.m. CT/7 p.m. MT on Sunday.
