FULLERTON, Calif. – Utah Valley University suffered its first defeat of the season, 2-0, at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday night. It was also the first time the Wolverines (1-1-1) have lost to the Titans (4-0-0) after winning the two previous meetings.
"I thought our start was very good. We created enough quality chances to get a goal or two and that certainly would've changed the game," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "Nonetheless, it was a tough loss. I applaud our players as they never quit working, despite having next to nothing left after Friday night's overtime match with only 10-men.
Looking ahead, we're in a good spot, and the boys are ready to return to Clyde Field for our upcoming two-game homestand."
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Cal State Fullerton broke through with an early second-half goal from Jessy Sotelo, just three minutes after the break. Jose Delgado picked up the assist.
The Titans got an insurance goal in the 80
th minute when Charly Anguiano fired a shot from the top of the 18 and gave CSUF a 2-0 lead, with the assist going to Oscar Flores.
The Wolverines were credited with five shots, two on goal, while the Titans finished with 14 shots, four on goal.
It was the second straight two-nil win for Cal State Fullerton, winners over No. 18 (TopDrawerSoccer.com) Loyola Chicago on Friday night as the Titans remained perfect on the season. Utah Valley and CSUN played to a 2-2 draw on Friday night in Northridge. CSUN routed San Francisco, 6-0, on Sunday.
Utah Valley returns to Clyde field later this week when Canisius comes to Orem for a Friday night contest at 7 p.m. MT. UVU will also host UC Irvine during its homestand, on Monday, Sept. 16 at 5 p.m. MT.
