GREEN RIVER, Wyo. – Taylor LaMont and
Kimball Bastian each recorded big wins for Utah Valley on the day, but Wyoming managed to claim eight of 10 bouts on its way to defeating UVU, 37-9, on Sunday afternoon at Green River High School in Green River, Wyoming.
Â
LaMont had the win of the day by pinning sixth-ranked Montorie Bridges in the first period at 133 pounds, while Bastian battled throughout his match on his way to earning a 12-5 overtime victory over 10th-ranked Hayden Hastings at 174.Â
Â
The Wolverines fall to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in Big 12 action with the setback, while Wyoming improves to 6-7 on the season and 3-1 in conference competition with the win.Â
Â
UVU redshirt freshman
Will Edelblute jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the opening match over Wyoming's Jacob Svihel at 125 pounds, but in the end Svihel managed to overcome the early deficit and pin Edelblute in the third period to give the Cowboys an early 6-0 advantage.
Â
In a marquee matchup at 133 pounds, nineteenth-ranked
Taylor LaMont delivered a statement victory for the Wolverines by locking in a headlock and throwing sixth-ranked Bridges to the mat and quickly pinning him in just 1:05 to deadlock the team score at 6-6. LaMont, who recently qualified to compete at the upcoming U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Greco-Roman wrestling, used his Greco roots en route to knocking off the two-time NCAA qualifier and 2018 All-American Bridges.Â
Â
Wyoming then responded with wins at 141, 149, 157, and 165 to take a 27-6 lead. Trevor Jeffries, No. 32 Dewey Krueger, and Cole Moody all delivered falls during the stretch for the Pokes, while Utah native and 20th-ranked Jaron Jensen picked up a hard fought 1-0 decision victory over UVU's
Cameron Hunsaker at 149 pounds for the other win.Â
Â
At 174 pounds, ninth-ranked senior and two-time UVU NCAA qualifier Bastian then responded for the Wolverines with an overtime victory over a familiar foe in No. 10 Hayden Hastings. With a questionable stall call sending the contest to overtime, Bastian then looked to have secured the winning takedown at the end of the first sudden victory period, but no takedown was awarded as the two headed to tiebreakers. In the tiebreakers, Bastian then went to work by picking up a reversal to take a 6-4 lead. Then in the second tiebreaker period, the Wolverine senior racked up a takedown and a late four-point nearfall on his way to earning an emphatic 12-5 overtime victory over the fellow ranked foe.
Â
Wyoming then responded with a major decision from No. 30 Tate Samuelson at 184 pounds to extend its advantage to 31-9. Then at 197, three-time UVU three-time NCAA qualifier and 19th-ranked
Tanner Orndorff and 25th-ranked Stephen Buchanan found themselves deadlocked in a battle. Tied at 3-3 in the third, Buchanan worked a go-ahead escape to take a 4-3 lead. With the clock winding down, Orndorff got in on a double-leg shot but Buchanan managed to turn his momentum and throw him to his back for a late takedown and nearfall to win by a score of 8-3.Â
Â
With fifth-ranked UVU sophomore
Tate Orndorff out of the lineup for the Wolverines on the weekend, 18th-ranked Brian Andrews finished off the dual with another win for the Cowboys by pulling out a 4-0 victory over Utah Valley's
Chase Trussell at heavyweight.
Â
LaMont improves to 9-5 on the season with his win over Bridges, while Bastian ups his season record to 9-6. Both Wolverine grapplers went a perfect 2-0 on the week, as they each previously earned wins against Stanford at home on Friday. Â
Â
The Wolverines will now return to Orem to open a three-match Big 12 homestand against Air Force on Thursday, Jan. 30. UVU will also host North Dakota State (Feb. 3) and Northern Colorado (Feb. 14) during the homestand. All three league matches will begin at 7 p.m. MT and will be contested at UVU's Lockhart Arena.Â
