RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A big fourth quarter helped propel California Baptist University past Utah Valley University, 80-67, on Wednesday afternoon at the CBU Events Center.
Jordan Holland had 20 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for the Wolverines (8-12, 5-3), but the Lancers (10-11, 2-5) hit their final seven attempts from the field – four of which came from three -- and outscored UVU 26-15 in the fourth.
"We've got to go back to drawing board. That's two games in a row... that was really similar to the Grand Canyon game," said UVU head coach Dan Nielson. "Give CBU credit, they shot the ball well, especially in the second half. But right now our defensive intensity is too reliant on success on the offensive end."
Alexis Cortez added 11 points off the bench for Utah Valley while
Eve Braslis and
Megan Jensen both scored eight. California Baptist's Ana Olaeta had 23 points to lead all scorers, going 9-for-10 from the field, and also dished out seven assists. Lexy Ram added 22 and Georgia Dale scored 16 and the CBU trio combined for 61 points and were a combined 23-for-31 from the field.
The Lancers, who lead the WAC in both 3-pointers made and taken by a wide margin didn't a field goal attempt inside the 3-point line until the 2:21 mark of the first quarter. CBU's first 12 shots all came from distance, with five of those falling. The Wolverines kept pace, hitting 9-for-15 from the field to start, and the game was tied at 19.
Madison Grange and Cortez both knocked down 3-pointers in the final minute of the first, with Cortez' taking a shooter's bounce and dropping right as the horn sounded. UVU shot 61.1% from the field and led 27-23 after one.
Jensen scored on a put-back early in the second to give UVU a 31-25 advantage and the Wolverines stretched it seven on two occasions.
Josie Williams scored on a dish from
Nehaa Sohail to give UVU a 37-30 lead. Tiena Afu later hit a three for the Lancers, their seventh of the half, in the closing seconds to make it 39-35 at the break.
The game was tied at 43 when Holland scored on a tip-in and Cortez hit a corner three to give the Wolverines a 48-43 lead with 2:13 left in the third. The Lancers closed the quarter with an 11-4 run over the final 1:58, including a Ram three with six seconds left. California Baptist led 54-52 after three.
Ram scored to open the fourth and, following a Williams turnaround for UVU, scored five straight points to push the Lancers lead to seven, 61-54, for their biggest lead to that point.
Out of a timeout, Holland hit a three and a pair from the line to cut it to two, but CBU got another three from Ram and layup from Olaeta to push it back to seven, 66-59. With UVU down five, Olaeta got a 3-point play with a layup and free throw and Dale hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give CBU a 78-64 lead.
California Baptist finished 29-for-60 (48.3%) from the field and were 15-for-37 from beyond the arc. CBU was 10-for-15 overall and 5-for-7 from three in the fourth. Utah Valley finished 24-for-64 (37.5%) overall.
The Wolverines will be off until next Saturday, Feb. 8, when they begin the second half of WAC play at Seattle U in a 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT tip.
