OREM – In the first time in about a year, the Utah Valley Wolverines were able to play volleyball. The Green Team came away with a 3-0 sweep of the White Team in the annual Green & White scrimmage in Lockhart Arena.
Kristen Bell led a balanced attack as the Green Team used its experience to pull away at the end of each set.
"It was exciting to just get out here and play," said Utah Valley head coach
Sam Atoa. "This ends our non-conference season and we'll prepare to go into the break and get ready for conference play in January. I saw a lot of good things and a lot of things that we are going to watch on film and get better. There's a lot of room to grow and I was pleased to have the opportunity to compete."
The Green Team pulled away to take the first set, 25-16.
Elena Hansen led a balanced attack with four kills and an ace.
Kaili Downs added four kills as well and
Kristen Bell had three kills and a dig.
Tori Dorius and
Caleigh Vagana each chipped in five kills for the White Team.
The Green Team took the second set in dominating fashion, winning 25-13, to extend its lead to 2-0. After the White Team cut the lead down to 13-10, the Green Team finished the set on a 12-3 run. Bell led the green squad with seven kills in the set.
Sadie Hamson added four kills of her own and
Seren Jardine had six digs and an ace. Dorius led the White Team with five kills.
After falling behind 11-4, the Green Team came storming back with a 12-5 burst to tie the set up at 16 apiece. After exchanging points, the Green Team scored the final eight points of the match to complete the comeback and the sweep.
"The Green team has that experience and they started to play more consistent like they did in the first two sets that got them back into it," said Atoa. "There were a few costly errors hurt the White team and they weren't able to sustain their early momentum. Our newcomers have a lot of talent and they are going to learn from this experience. I like what they are doing right now and it will take a little bit but they will be good."
Bell led the Green Team with 12 kills. Downs and Hamson each finished with nine kills of their own and Jardine led the squad with 17 digs and three aces.
Jaysa Funk Stratton led all players with 28 assists to go along with 13 digs. Dorius led all players with 14 kills and Vagana added nine kills for the white team.
Ke'ilani Sedrick led the White Team with 14 digs and
Abbie Miller added 16 assists to go along with eight digs.
