UVU lands BYU transfer Babalu Ugwu

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University women's basketball coach Dan Nielson has announced the signing of BYU transfer Babalu Ugwu. She'll join the Wolverines immediately and become eligible to play for the 2021-22 season as a junior.

"We are ecstatic that Babalu will be joining our Wolverine family," Nielson said. "I have known her for several years and know that she will be an asset to our program both on and off the court. Her ability to score in the post, rebound and defend multiple positions will make an immediate impact on our team. Wolverine fans are going to love seeing her compete next fall."

Ugwu, a 6-foot forward, is a native of Jundiai, Sao Paolo, Brazil and was a member of the U14-U17 Brazilian National Teams. As a member of the U16 Brazilian National Team at the 2015 FIBA World Championships, Ugwu scored 23 points in an upset win over the USA. That team finished second to the Canadian National Team with Ugwu averaging 12.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game.

She attended high school in North Carolina, at Friendship Christian School, where she was named MVP of the 2017 State Tournament and led her team to a 2018 State Championship. Ugwu originally signed with BYU as an ESPN three-star recruit. She also played club for the Carolina Waves Basketball Club.

At BYU, she appeared in 63 games over two-plus seasons and averaged 3.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
