OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley University wrestling team held the UVU Wrestle-Offs on Monday morning at the Utah Valley Wrestling Room, and freshman
Danny Snediker (157 pounds) and senior
Koy Wilkinson (165) led the way by each going 2-0 during the intrasquad scrimmage.
Redshirt freshman
Ty Smith (133), as well as sophomores
Cameron Hunsaker (149) and
Jacob Armstrong (197) also wrestled well by all recording wins by fall, while two-time NCAA qualifier and senior 174-pounder
Demetrius Romero, sophomore
Chase Trussell (heavyweight), and the freshman Snediker all picked up wins by major decision.
"We're excited to be able to compete and it was fun for the guys to get out and get in some competition today," head UVU wrestling coach
Greg Williams said. "I don't think that I was too surprised by any of the matches (results), but I was happy with our conditioning as well as some things that I saw from our freshmen and younger guys. We're looking forward to getting back to the room next week and preparing for the opener."
The freshman Snediker went 2-0 on the day at 157 pounds with an 18-6 major decision over sophomore
Brigg Hoopes and a hard fought 5-1 victory over junior
Jed Loveless. The senior Wilkinson too went 2-0 with wins over redshirt freshmen
RJ Bingham (10-6) and
Kekana Fouret (3-1) at 165.
Redshirt freshman and Drexel transfer Smith looked strong in one of the final matches of the contest with a 46-second fall over sophomore
Kainalu Estrella at 133, while returning starters Hunsaker (4:02) and Armstrong (6:29) both managed to lock up cradles over
Nick Rino and
Hunter Morse, respectively, to also win by fall. After missing 2019-20 with a knee injury, the 2019 Big 12 champion Romero also looked solid in his exhibition bout by picking up a 13-3 bonus-point win over junior
Ashton Seely, while sophomore heavyweight Trussell also won by major decision with a 12-3 victory over
Payson Anderton.
In a non-scored drill match, two-time NCAA qualifier and recent U23 Greco-Roman Nationals champion
Taylor LaMont showed off some quickness against freshman
Kase Mauger in the final match of the competition. LaMont, who qualified for his second trip to the NCAA Championships last season, finished with a 17-7 record a year ago and was the No. 1 seed at the 2020 Big 12 Championships.
Loveless (4-2 over Hoopes), Fouret (4-0 over
Tanner Lofthouse), Seely (1-0 over Morse), Estrella (7-4 over
Sammy Heywood), and
Tanner Lofthouse (5-1 over Bingham) also earned victories during the scrimmage.
