Utah Valley hosts Southern Utah on Wednesday night

UTAH VALLEY HOSTS SOUTHERN UTAH ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT
  • Utah Valley continues play at home on Wednesday against in-state rival Southern Utah at the UCCU Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
     
  • Jamison Overton and Le'Tre Darthard each scored 16 points and Fardaws Aimaq recorded a 12-point, 18-rebound double-double to lead Utah Valley to a 79-71 win over Westminster on Wednesday night at the UCCU Center. Overton connected on 7 of 10 shots from the field for his 16 points. He also pulled down three rebounds and had a pair of steals. Aimaq scored his 12 points on 6 of 13 shots from the field. His 18 boards matches the 18 rebounds he had against Adams State in the season opener.
     
  • Fardaws Aimaq pulled down 18 rebounds in UVU's win over Westminster last week, matching his 18-rebound tally against Adams State in UVU's season opener. He was once again just one rebound shy of tying the UVU single game record of 19 set by Baylee Steel at BYU on Nov. 9, 2018.
     
  • Aimaq has pulled down 43 rebounds in just three games so far this season--an average of 14.3 a game, which ranks currently ranks second nationally. He also ranks third in defensive boards per game (9.3) and fourth in offensive rebounds per game at 5.0 a contest. Blaze Nield holds one of the nation's top assist turnover ratio numbers in the nation at 11.0, which ranks fourth nationally. Trey Woodbury's 57.1 percent mark from long range this season ranks him 22nd in the nation. As a team, UVU ranks in the top-50 in four different statistical categories, including assists per game (9th, 21.7), assist turnover ratio (34th, 1.51), turnovers forced (44th, 18.0), and total assists (50th, 65).
     
  • Trey Woodbury earned College Sports Madness Player of the Week honors for Nov. 22-28 for his play in UVU's season-opening win over Adams State and his performance at BYU. Over the two games against ACU and BYU, Woodbury averaged 23.0 points 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. He shot 63.3 percent from the field and 70 percent from beyond the arc.
     
  • Mark Madsen enters his second season as the head coach of the Wolverines. The two-time NBA champion, former Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach, and former Stanford basketball star went 11-19 during his first season with UVU. He is just the third head coach in UVU's Division I history. Madsen took  over the Utah Valley program last season after serving the past six seasons as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was a two-time NBA champion as a player with the Lakers (2001 and 2002), and played for the Minnesota Timberwolves for six seasons.
BROADCAST INFORMATION
Wednesday's game against Southern Utah will be broadcast live on the WAC Digital Network, which is available at WACsports.com/Watch. Brandon Crow will be handling the play-by-play duties. The WAC Digital Network is also available on Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and Roku TV. UVU will also send the feed out on its YouTube channel. KSL TV will also stream the game on the KSL TV app. The game will also be broadcast over the radio waves as Jim McCulloch enters his 11th season as the Voice of the Wolverines. Josh Kallunki will be handling the color commentary duties on the radio. The radio broadcast will be aired live on ESPN 960AM radio. A live stream of the radio broadcast will also be available at ESPN960Sports.com.

ABOUT SOUTHERN UTAH
Southern Utah is 3-1 on the season with a win over St. Katherine and a two-game sweep at home last week over conference foe Montana. Both of SUU's wins over Montana came down to the final possession with the Thunderbirds coming out on top with points in the final seconds. It marked the first time since 1999 that SUU had defeated Montana at home. SUU junior forward Maizen Fausett earned Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honors, averaging 15.0 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field in the two wins. SUU has four players averaging double figures through its four games this year, including Tevian Jones (15.3 ppg.), John Knight III (14.0 ppg.), Fausett (13.5 ppg.), and Dre Marin (12.0 ppg.). As a team, Southern Utah is averaging 79.2 points a game, while limiting its opponents to a 67.2 points per game average. The team is averaging nearly 10 threes a game with a 35.8 percent clip.

SERIES HISTORY VS. SOUTHERN UTAH
Utah Valley (2-1) and Southern Utah (3-1) will meet up on the basketball hardwood for the ninth time on Wednesday. It will mark the fourth time that the two teams have met up in Orem. UVU leads the all-time series, 4-3. The Wolverines also hold a 2-1 advantage in game played in Orem. SUU has won two straight over the Wolverines, including a 73-72 heartbreaker last season in Cedar City.

AIMAQ RECORDS SECOND-MOST REBOUNDS IN A SINGLE GAME IN UVU HISTORY (TWICE)
Fardaws Aimaq  has pulled down 18 rebounds in two separate games this season. He first did it against Adams State on Nov. 26 in the UVU's season opener. He then did it again in a win over Westminster on Dec. 2. The 18 rebounds are the second-most boards ever recorded in a single game in UVU history. Baylee Steele holds the UVU single game record of 19 at BYU on Nov. 9, 2018.

UTAH VALLEY HAS WON 39 OF ITS LAST 48 GAMES AT HOME
UVU holds an impressive 39-9 (81 percent) record at home since a win over Seattle U on March 4, 2017. Utah Valley holds an all-time 189-53 (78 percent) record in its 15th season this year at the UCCU Center. The Wolverines are averaging 13.7 wins a season on their home hardwood. UVU finished the 2018-19 season with a school-record 16-1 mark. The team went 14-1 at home during the 2017-18 season and was 6-7 at home in 2019-20. UVU holds a perfect 2-0 record at home this season.
