LAS VEGAS, Nevada – An RBI single from
Abby Doughty sent Utah Valley University to a 4-3, walk-off win in eight innings over Montana on Friday afternoon at the Marucci Desert Classic.
Combined with an earlier 6-2 win over Weber State, the Wolverines (5-1) have won four straight and are off to the best start in the program's NCAA Division I era, which began in 2004. UVU has trailed in each of the four wins before coming from behind to get the victory.
"The girls just stepped up in that last inning to win it for us," said UVU head coach
Stacy May-Johnson. "We had a ton of errors and a ton of hits, but we were able to overcome some mistakes and won the ballgame anyway. In spite of the errors, I do have to give the defense credit because we still made big plays when we needed them."
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, placing a runner at second base for each team in the eighth, UVU trailed after a single and error allowed the Grizzlies to take a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the eighth with
Madison Carr at second and one out,
Peyton Prigge singled to tie it and moved to second on the throw home.
Jade Miller followed with a base hit but Prigge was cut down at the plate trying to score the winning run, but
Basia Query singled to move Miller to second before Doughty ended it.
UVU starter
Devyn Cretz, the reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week, went the distance and surrendered just four scattered hits and struck out five. She pitched around four defensive errors by the Wolverines and didn't allow an earned run and improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Wolverines finished with 16 hits with the trio of Miller, Query and Doughty each collecting three-hit games.
Linnah Rebolledo and Carr both and two hits. Doughty, Rebolledo,
Karleigh Olsen and Prigge each drove in a run in the win.
UVU led 1-0 after Carr singled and scored on an Olsen double in the fourth before Montana scored twice in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. The Wolverines came right back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Rebolledo's sacrifice fly scored Query, who singled earlier in the inning and was at third after Doughty and Steverson both had base hits.
The Wolverines had the potential winning run on in the bottom of the seventh but a fielder's choice and a groundout kept the game tied and forced the extra frame.
UVU continues play at the tournament on Saturday. The Wolverines will again face Montana at 10 a.m. PT/11 a.m. MT and host UNLV at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT.
