Cretz shuts out UNLV, Wolverines move to 8-2

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Devyn Cretz tossed a shutout and Utah Valley University wrapped up a successful weekend with 2-0 win over host UNLV at the Marucci Desert Classic on Sunday. UVU went 5-1 on the weekend and at 8-2 continues its hottest start in the program's NCAA Division I era.

After seeing their five-game win streak stopped by the Rebels (8-3) on Saturday, the Wolverines snapped a six-game UNLV win streak with Sunday's win. Cretz improved to 3-0 and tossed her third complete game and first shutout of the season. She didn't walk a batter and allowed seven hits, five of which were infield hits, but only two came after the second inning.

UNLV loaded the bases with three straight two-out infield singles in the second inning, but Cretz got a comebacker to end the threat. After that, Cretz retired nine straight at 16 of the last 18 she faced, only allowing two-out singles in the sixth and seventh.

Abby Doughty and Lyndsay Steverson both drove in runs for Utah Valley. Doughty singled home Emery Nielson with a two-out base hit in the third inning. Steverson drove in Jade Miller in the fifth on a fielder's choice. The UNLV third baseman made a diving stop on Steverson's grounder and tried to feed the shortstop covering third, but Basia Query was ruled safe on a close play and everyone was safe, allowing Miller to score.

Earlier on Sunday, Doughty's grand slam catapulted UVU past Weber State, 6-5. The Wolverines scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning to steal the win. Utah Valley finished the weekend 2-0 over both Weber State and Montana and split two games with UNLV.

The Wolverines will travel to the Bay Area next weekend where they'll face Nevada and Saint Mary's in Moraga, California. The Wolverines will play single games against both teams on Friday and a Saturday doubleheader against the Gaels.
