LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Abby Doughty hit a grand slam to cap a six-run sixth inning as Utah Valley University came from five runs down to steal a win over in-state rival Weber State University on Sunday morning at the Marucci Desert Classic at UNLV.
Down 5-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Wolverines (7-2) rallied for the improbable win and
Devyn Cretz came on to pitch a 1-2-3 seventh to secure the win and get the save.
The rally started with an infield single by
Siena Sandoval and the bases were later loaded after another infield hit off the bat of
Emery Nielson. An error allowed one run to score, followed by a
Jade Miller walk with the bases full of Wolverines to force in another run. After a lineout for the second out, Doughty hit the game-winning grand slam. It's UVU's first grand slam of the season and the first since Doughty hit one last season in a win over Kansas City.
Katie Zuniga pitched 3.0 innings in relief and picked her second win. The save for Cretz is her third already this season.
Basia Query and Doughty both had two hits for UVU.
Weber State took its lead with single runs in the first, second and third innings and then added two more in the fifth. The Wildcats (3-7) got a 2-for-3 game from Lauren Hoe, including a second-inning home run. Takesha Saltern also had two hits and scored a run. Mariah Ramirez (5-5) took the loss for Weber State, with just one of the six runs the Wolverines scored coming in earned.
