UVU begins WAC's second half at Seattle U

OPENING TIP
Utah Valley University begins the second half of the Western Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT/3 p.m. MT at Seattle University.

The Wolverines (8-12, 5-3) opened WAC play with five straight wins but have dropped three straight and are currently tied for third along with CSU Bakersfield, one game back of Kansas City and Grand Canyon.

The Wolverines saw a big fourth-quarter run by California Baptist result in an 80-67 loss last week in Riverside. Utah Valley got 20 points and a career-high 14 rebounds from Jordan Holland, but CBU outscored UVU 37-19 over the last 12 minutes of gametime, including 26-15 in the fourth quarter.

The Lancers hit 15 3-pointers and took 37, both season highs for a Utah Valley opponent this season.

In the earlier match-up between UVU and Seattle U on Jan. 11 in Orem, the Wolverines scored nine straight points to start the fourth quarter to break a tie at the end of the third en route to their fifth straight win.

Maria Carvalho finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Wolverines and Joana Alves led the Redhawks with 17 points.

ABOUT THE REDHAWKS
Seattle U (9-12, 3-5) has won two straight including a convincing 83-49 road win at California Baptist last week. The Redhawks are currently in seventh place in the WAC standings, but just two games in the loss column out of third place. Kamira Sanders is second among all WAC players, averaging 17.1 points per game. Seattle U leads the all-time series against UVU 10-7, but the Wolverines have won the last three.

COMING UP
The Wolverines return home next week to host UT Rio Grande Valley (Feb. 13) and New Mexico State (Feb. 15).
