OPENING TIP
Utah Valley University needs to win on Thursday to keeps its WAC title hopes alive when the Wolverines visit league-leading Kansas City in the first of two remaining games in the conference regular season.Â
The Wolverines (12-14, 9-5) have won three straight overall while the Roos (18-10, 11-3) have already clinched at least a share of the regular season championship and are also winners of three in a row. Grand Canyon is currently second in the WAC at 10-5 and plays its final game on Saturday at CSU Bakersfield while Utah Valley is in third.
UVU has clinched no worse than the No. 3 seed in next week's WAC Tournament. Two Wolverine wins, combined with two KC losses and a GCU win would create a three-way tie atop the standings, with UVU earning the top seed via tiebreakers.Â
Utah Valley led from start-to-finish in a 74-57 win over California Baptist last Wednesday on Senior Night. Jordan Holland, in her final home game, scored 18 and shared game-high honors with Eve Braslis, who also hauled in 10 rebounds and dished out six assists. Maria Carvalho also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Carvalho scored 19 points and Alexis Cortez added 16 in a 62-41 win for UVU over Kansas City back in January in Orem in the first game between the teams. The Wolverines outscored the Roos 39-24 in the second half.Â
ABOUT THE ROOS
Since falling to the Wolverines on Jan. 4 in Orem, Kansas City has won 10 of its last 12 in its last season as members of the WAC. KC is joining the Summit League this summer. Ericka Mattingly is third in the WAC with an average of 15.9 points per game and is scoring 17.8 per contest during a stretch of nine games, when the Roos have gone 8-1. Utah Valley is 9-6 all-time against Kansas City including a 2-4 record in Kansas City.Â
