CHICAGO — Aaron Nixon and James Peña both scored two goals each and
Diego Castillo also scored as Utah Valley University erupted with five second-half goals in a 5-0 win at Chicago State on Friday. The Wolverines (7-3-2, 4-2-0) limited the Cougars (2-10-2, 0-6-1) to just one shot attempt in the contest.
The game marked the first time Utah Valley had two players register a brace in the same game, and also matched the program record for goals scored in a game, set earlier this season against CSUN and in the program's first-ever match in 2014.
After a scoreless first half, Nixon scored two goals just seven minutes apart with both coming on set pieces. The first was a free kick that
Jojea Kwizera started. He found
Diego Castillo and his cross directed in off of Nixon's head for the 1-0 lead in the 56th minute. Kwizera assisted on the second goal as well, in the 62nd minute, delivering a cross on a free kick to Nixon right in front of the goal. Nixon now has a team-high six goals on the season.
Castillo scored in the 75th minute, on an assist from
Evans Armah, and Peña scored his first goal just over two minutes later on a Castillo assist. The final goal came in the 89th minute when
Zach Maas' cross to the far post found Peña, who has now scored three times in the last two matches.
The Wolverines were credited with 14 shots while securing the first clean sheet of freshman goalkeeper
Jason Smith's career. Utah Valley finished with 10 shots on goal, a .714 percentage.
UVU now heads to Houston Baptist for a contest against the Huskies that kicks off at 1 p.m. CT/noon MT and will air live on the WAC Digital Network.
