SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A pair of goals in the first half carried Utah Valley University to a 2-1 road win at Incarnate Word in WAC men's soccer on Sunday afternoon.
Aaron Nixon and
Jojea Kwizera scored the Wolverines' (5-1-2, 2-0-0) goals, with Kwizera and
Erik Lyons assisting on Nixon's. For Nixon, it was goal number four on the season, which leads the team, while Kwizera notched his second goal and is now tied for the team lead with four assists.
Nixon scored in the 34th minute from 10 yards out on a perfectly placed header into the lower right corner and past the diving keeper. Kwizera, who was taking a corner kick, passed it out to Lyons and his cross found Nixon in traffic in the box.
The Wolverines didn't waste much time in getting a second goal, coming just four minutes later in the 38th minute. Kwizera split two defenders just outside the box and took it in between two more, cut left and fired a rocket with his left foot that found the goal just under the cross bar and into the upper netting.
The Cardinals made it a 2-1 game with just over 17 minutes left in regulation when Eduardo Perez scored with Bernabe Lopez assisting on the play. The UVU defense held the line over the waning minutes of the game, not allowing UIW to get any looks at a possible equalizer.
The Wolverines had a 16-7 edge in total shots including 7-3 on goal.
Jason Smith collected two saves in goal for Utah Valley.
UVU returns home for the first time in WAC play this week with San José State coming to Clyde Field on Thursday and Seattle U in town on Saturday. Both games kick off at 7 p.m. MT.
