OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University fell for the first time in WAC play, 1-0, to San José State on Thursday at Clyde Field. The Wolverines dropped to 5-2-2 overall and 2-1-0 in conference while the Spartans improved to 5-5-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the WAC.
After over 76 minutes of scoreless action, Rudi Castro scored on a header just inside the left post on assists from Willy Miranda and Ryota Nakashima. Nakashima lofted a cross to the far post for Castro, who secured the game-winner and sent the Spartans to their third straight win. San José State was playing a man down after Miguel Bermudez was shown his second yellow card and sent off in the 73rd minute.
Evans Armah nearly got the Wolverines in scoring column in the 25th minute. He danced between a flurry of defenders and fired but it hit the right post and fell away.
Jojea Kwizera rebounded it but his attempt was just wide left and the game remained scoreless.
Utah Valley finished with 13 shots, three on frame, while San José State was credited with seven shots, two on goal. The Wolverines will now host Seattle U on Saturday night at 7 p.m. MT. The Redhawks fell at California Baptist on Thursday, 2-1.
