OREM, Utah — A goal in the second half by Shaun-Chris Joash was the difference as No. 25 Grand Canyon University edged Utah Valley University, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon on Clyde Field. The game was the home finale for UVU, with the team's 11 seniors honored prior to the match.
Those honored prior to the match were:
Evans Armah,
Mark Brown,
Conner Dearden,
Mckay Eves,
Erik Lyons,
Zach Maas,
James Peña,
Sterling Penniston-John,
Zahir Vazquez, Wheelwright, and
Caleb Wight.
The Wolverines dropped to 8-5-2 overall and 5-4-0 in conference while the Lopes secured at least a share of the WAC regular-season title and improved to 14-2-0 overall and 9-1-0 in league play.
UVU is still looking to secure a spot in the WAC Tournament, which starts Nov. 10 in Phoenix, and could possibly clinch a berth based on Sunday's results, or with a win in next week's regular-season finale at California Baptist. That game will be played on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. PT.
Joash's goal was an impressive strike with his left foot. He held the defender off and fired from right at the top of the 18 into the upper netting inside the near post and out of UVU goalkeeper
Joseph Wheelwright's reach. Wheelwright, one of the seniors playing their final game on Clyde Field, finished with three saves in the match.
Grand Canyon goalkeeper Anthony Munoz earned the clean sheet behind an eight-save afternoon, collecting four in each half. The Wolverines finished with 13 shots overall, to five from the Lopes. GCU was on target with four of their five attempts. Of UVU's eight shots on frame,
Aaron Nixon had three.
