PHOENIX—Utah Valley took an early lead, but Grand Canyon answered with three straight goals to help lift the Lopes to a 6-2 win over the Wolverines on Saturday night at GCU Stadium in a match that decided the WAC west division title.
Utah Valley wraps up regular season play with an 11-6-2 overall record. The Wolverines finish WAC play in second place in the west division with a 6-2-2 record.
"Congratulations have to go out to Grand Canyon on the division title as they came out and played really well tonight" said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "There is a lot we will take away from this game and will learn from. We're defiantly going to leave this one here and will now focus on winning three games at the WAC Tournament in Texas, which we are absolutely capable of."
Utah Valley had given up just four goals in its previous nine matches combined prior to Saturday night's game against GCU. The six goals are the most that UVU has given up in a single match this season.
Amber Tripp sent a throw-in down the right side of the field where
Julianna Carter settled it and sent it into the box to
Sadie Brockbank. Brockbank then fired a shot that deflected off the GCU keeper out to the top of the six.
Breanna DeWaal then was in the box and sent the rebound into the back of the net to give UVU an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.
Grand Canyon's Marleen Schimmer scored the equalizer in the 24th minute after a pass into the box deflected off a UVU defender. Schimmer took advantage and put a shot into the goal to tie the match up at 1-1.
Schimmer scored again in the 28th minute as she sent a shot into the back of the net from about 20 yards out. GCU's Gianna Gourley then scored in the 35th minute to extend the Antelope lead to a 3-1 advantage. The 'Lopes went up 4-1 after Dani Babb found the net in the 49th minute.
DeWaal sent a ball into the box that was headed out by a GCU defender in the 61st minute to
Breanna Eves. Eves then made a move past a GCU defender to the left side of the box where she chipped a shot with her left foot to the far post and into the back of the net to cut the GCU lead to 4-2.
Grand Canyon's Babb scored her second goal of the night in the 80th minute and Reese Mendelhall then added another in the 81st minute as the Lopes pushed their lead to 6-2.
GCU just edged out UVU on shots, 17-16. Each team had nine shots on goal. Brockbank led UVU with a season-high nine shots, including a match-best five on frame. Tripp had three shots, while DeWaal, Eves, Carter, and
Nicole Ray each had one.
Brooklyn Nielsen led UVU in the box with six saves on the night.
Utah Valley has earned the WAC western division No. 2 seed at next week's WAC Tournament in Abilene, Texas. The Wolverines will play southwest division No. 3 seed Sam Houston in the quafterfinals on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. MT
