Todd Phillips promoted to associate head coach

OREM—Utah Valley University men's basketball head coach Mark Madsen has announced that Todd Phillips has been promoted to Associate Head Coach. Phillips has served as Madsen's assistant coach for the past two seasons and was part of a coaching staff that helped the Wolverines to a share of the WAC regular season title last season.

"Todd Phillips is a tremendous basketball mind who understands X's and O's at the deepest level," said Madsen. "Having coached Salt Lake Community College to a national championship, Coach Phillips has great insights on in-game adjustments as well as an irreplaceable recruiting network in this region and beyond. Coach Phillips is a workaholic who is also able to keep things fun for the players and staff. His contribution to the Utah Valley community both on and off the court has been invaluable."

Phillips begins his third season on the staff at Utah Valley this year. After returning just two players, welcoming 16 newcomers, and being selected seventh in the WAC preseason poll last year, Phillips helped UVU to a WAC regular season title in 2020-21. It marked just the second WAC title in UVU history and its first since the 2013-14 season.

Phillips' responsibilities include coaching the forwards and centers on the team and one those players, Fardaws Aimaq, became the first player in UVU history to earn both WAC Player of the Year honors and the WAC Defensive Player of the Year award. Aimaq became the first player in 40 years to average 15 rebounds a game and was the nation's leader in total rebounds, rebounds per game, and defensive rebounds per game. Aimaq also earned All-District honors and was named a finalist for both the Lou Henson Player of the Year award and the Lefty Driesell National Defensive Player of the Year award. Aimaq won Riley Wallace Award, which is given annually to the top transfer in Division I college basketball.

"I am incredibly honored and very appreciative of Coach Madsen and the athletic department for elevating me in this role," said Phillips. "I love working at Utah Valley and coaching side by side with this great staff. I am very excited to continue to help build Utah Valley basketball."

Phillips joined the Wolverine staff in 2019 after nine seasons as the head coach at Salt Lake Community College where he compiled a 205-58 (.779) overall record and an 82-32 mark in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.

Phillips led his team to a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national title in 2016 as the No. 13 seed. His 2015-16 team compiled a 31-8 overall record and finished the season with nine straight wins to claim the national championship. He was named the NJCAA Coach of the Year for his accomplishments during the 2015-16 season. Former Wolverine Conner Toolson was named NJCAA Tournament MVP under Phillips guidance in 2016.

During his tenure at SLCC, Phillips led his team to four NJCAA Tournament appearances, four Region 18 Tournament championships, three SWAC regular season titles, and one NJCAA tournament championship. He earned SWAC Coach of the Year honors in 2013, 2015, and 2018. He also received the Region 18 Co-Coach of the Year award in 2018.
