OPENING TIP
- Utah Valley University wraps up its two-game road swing at Nevada on Saturday afternoon in Lawlor Events Center. Tip is set for 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT and the game will air live on the Mountain West Network.
- The Wolverines (2-1) picked picked up a big in-state road win at Southern Utah on Tuesday, 60-54. Josie Williams finished with 17 points and a new career-high 17 rebounds.
- So far this season Maria Carvalho is averaging 19.0 points and 7.3 rebounds while Williams has posted double-doubles in each of the three contests. She's averaging 15.7 points and 14.3 rebounds per game. Carvalho matched her career high against Park with 23 before following that up with 20 points and 10 boards against the Fresno State to earn WAC Player of the Week on Monday.
- Nevada is the second of two Mountain West foes UVU will face this season. The Wolverines previously dropped a 71-62 decision to Fresno State on Nov. 11.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley held off Southern Utah to pick up an in-state road win over the T-Birds in Cedar City, 60-54. In addition to Williams' career night on the boards and her third straight double-double, Utah Valley also got 14 from Carvalho and 13 from Madison Grange, while Megan Jensen added 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. The Wolverines scored 42 of their 60 points in the paint and outrebounded the Thunderbirds by 10, 42-32.
The Wolverines led by 11 entering the fourth and pushed the lead to 14 on a Kayla Anderson jumper with 6:26 remaining. SUU rallied out of a timeout, scoring nine straight points over the next 2:19 to make it a 52-47 game with 3:29 to go. UVU's defense held off the T-Birds on the next two possessions, until Grange scored on a tough turnaround near the baseline to push the lead back to seven, 54-47, with 1:18 remaining. The Wolverines went on to hit 6-of-8 from the line over the final minute to hold off their future WAC foe.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
Nevada (0-2) has dropped both of its games to West Coast Conference opponents, falling 66-61 at home against Saint Mary's on Nov. 10 before a 73-60 defeat at Santa Clara last Sunday. Da'Ja Hamilton scored 20 in the opener and is averaging 12.0 points through two games while Audrey Roden is averaging 11.5 points after 17 against Santa Clara. Nevada leads the all-time series 3-2 over Utah Valley, with the teams splitting two games in Reno. In the most recent game, the Wolf Pack won in Orem, 60-57, on Nov. 16, 2019 early in Coach Dan Nielson's first season.
