BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Six grapplers with Utah Valley University ties won Roadrunner Open titles and a total of 13 Wolverines posted podium finishes as UVU recorded a strong outing at CSU Bakersfield's Icardo Center on Sunday in Bakersfield, California. 
 
Freshman 133-pounder Haiden Drury and sophomore heavyweight Jayden Woodruff both won titles while wrestling for UVU on the day, while freshman 125-pounder Kase Mauger, junior 141-pounder Isaiah Delgado, freshman 165-pounder Danny Snediker and freshman Jack Forbes (197 pounds) all won titles while competing unattached. 
 
Also recording top-six finishes for the Wolverines at the Roadrunner Open were sophomore Hunter Cruz (184) by placing second, sophomore Kainalu Estrella (133) and redshirt freshman Kekana Fouret (174) by taking third, and freshman Yusief Lillie (125) by placing sixth. Competing unattached, sophomore Cameron Haddock (157) and freshman Levi Kovacs (197) both placed second, while Stockton O'Brien finished fourth at 141. 
 
"The guys competed really well today and I'm super happy with how they are wrestling," head UVU coach Greg Williams said. "They are just competitive. We had primarily backups and redshirts wrestling for us today, so I am pretty happy with what we are doing." 
 
The 28th-ranked Drury and Fresno State transfer ran the table in his weight class for UVU on Sunday en route to winning the 133-pound title by going a perfect 5-0. Drury picked up wins over Tiger Ortiz of Yorba Linda, 11-4, unattached Zach Wright, 11-1, and unattached Abraham Hinrichsen, 4-3, and California Baptist's Hunter Leake, 3-1, to reach the championship match. Drury then sealed the title and a perfect 7-0 weekend in SoCal with a win by injury default over Cal Poly's Joey Cape (1:01).
 
The redshirt sophomore Wolverine heavyweight Woodruff continued his strong start to the 2021-22 season by too going a perfect 4-0 on his way to winning the 285-pound title. Woodruff won all four of his matches by fall on the day, as he pinned Joseph Nava of Mission Viejo, 3:40, Jacob Smith of CBU, 0:51, Charles Hastriter of Oregon State/Beaver Dam RTC, 1:49, and Trevor Tinker of Cal Poly (Unattached) in 2:39 to conclude the pin-fest. 
 
Competing unattached, second-year freshman Mauger won the 125-pound title after posting an unblemished 4-0 outing. Mauger pinned three of his four opponents at the event with wins by fall over Jimmy Estrada of Menlo, Devin Garcia of CBU, and Eddie Flores of host CSU Bakersfield, as well as a first-round 9-2 decision over Joey Cruz (Unattached).
 
Also wrestling unattached, the junior 141-pounder Delgado too went 4-0 with four wins by decision to win the title at 141 pounds. Delgado defeated Christian Nunez (CBU), 9-6, teammate Stockton O`Brien, 3-1, Joshua Norikiyo (SF State), 3-2, before matching up with 2021 NCAA qualifier and 20th-ranked Angelo Martinoni of CSUB in the title bout. Delgado was the aggressor against Martinoni, as he went on to upset the 20th-ranked foe by a score of 8-5 to win the title. 
 
Competing unattached, second-year freshman Snediker too went 4-0 at 165 pounds to win his weight class title. Snediker won three of his four matches by bonus points, as he defeated Johnathan Moreno (Unattached) by fall (1:21), Augustine Garcia (CSUB) by major decision (11-2), Ryan Leong (Menlo), by major decision (13-5) and Braden Smelser (CSUB-UN), 8-1.
 
The freshman Forbes too won a title in his first collegiate action while competing unattached on the day at 197 pounds. Forbes went 3-0 with wins over Cole Jackson (Unattached), 12-8, Arick Lopez (CBU), 8-6 (SV-1), and teammate Levi Kovacs, 10-7.
 
"You take a look at it, and we had four redshirts win titles for us, so we're really excited about the future of the program with the redshirts that we have," Williams added. "This was Jack's first tournament, and it was pretty fun for him to meet up with his teammate Levi in the finals. That was also a really tough opponent that Isaiah was able to beat in the finals as was Kase's too. Jayden and Haiden both also had really solid performances for us, and Jayden was really dominant here today. Overall, I'm proud of the guys and I'm proud of our six wrestlers for stepping up and winning titles for us."
 
Competing unattached, the sophomore 157-pound Haddock had a nice tournament by going 3-0 en route to earning a second-place finish. After winning his first three matches to advance to the title match at 157 pounds, Haddock then took a medical forfeit to fall to CBU's AJ Raya and finish in second place. UVU sophomore transfer Cruz too finished in second place after going 3-1 at 184 pounds. Wrestling unattached, freshman 197-pounder Levi Kovacs too placed second after going 2-1. 
 
UVU redshirt sophomore Estrella and redshirt freshman Fouret each placed third at 133 and 174 pounds, respectively, after both going 4-1 at the Roadrunner Open. Second-year freshman O'Brien posted a 4-2 record on his way to placing fourth at 141 while wrestling unattached, while freshman Lillie went 2-3 on the day to place sixth at 125.  
 
A total of nine other Wolverines competed on the day at the Roadrunner Open. Sophomores Will Edelblute (133), Kobe Nelms (133) and Brigg Hoopes led the group by all finishing with 2-2 records. Freshman Alex Emmer (149) was next by going 1-1, while freshmen Sam Edelblute (149) and Hunter Morse both went 1-2. Wrestling unattached, freshman Merrell Morley posted a 2-2 outing at 184 pounds, while Tyson Humpherys went 1-2 at 141, and freshman Mahonri Rushton went 0-2 at 184. 
 
Earlier on the weekend, UVU defeated both CSU Bakersfield (32-9) and California Baptist (20-13) in dual action to improve to 5-1 on the young season. 
 
The Wolverines (5-1) will next send a contingent of grapplers to the Cowboy Open on Nov. 27 in Laramie, Wyoming. Following Saturday's tournament, UVU will head to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 3-4. Utah Valley's 2021-22 home opener will come on Monday, Dec. 20 when it welcomes Big 12 power and sixth-ranked Oklahoma State to the UCCU Center for a Big 12 clash.
