LARAMIE, Wyoming—
Fardaws Aimaq scored 14 points with five rebounds to lead Utah Valley in a 74-62 road loss to Wyoming on Saturday night at Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyoming.
Tied 55-55 with six minutes to play, Wyoming went on a 12-0 run with four threes to take a 67-55 lead with three minutes remaining. Utah Valley couldn't recover as the Cowboys secured the win. Utah Valley had overcome a 13-point first half deficit to take a 47-44 lead with 11 minutes to go but couldn't hold on down the stretch in the setback. The loss marks the first time this season that the Wolverines have dropped back-to-back games.
Utah Valley was only able to get to the line three times, connecting on 3 of 4 free throws, while Wyoming converted on 15 of its 21 shots from the line. The Wolverines connected on nine three-pointers, the most the team has made since draining nine at Pepperdine on Nov. 15. Wyoming knocked down 11 threes, including four in the final six minutes.
The Wolverines opened the game with a 5-4 before Wyoming's Dusell knocked down back-to-back threes to put the Cowboys up 10-5 with 16 minutes to play in the first half.
Tim Ceaser then knocked down a corner three to cut it back to just two points, 12-10, with 14:53. Wyoming then took a 17-3 lead at the 12:58 mark and then went on a 13-4 run to take its largest lead of the game, 30-17, with 8:10 to play in the half. The Wolverines outscored Wyoming 10-9 over the final eight minutes of the half as the Cowboys took a 39-27 lead into the break.
Blaze Nield and
Le'Tre Darthard knocked down back-to-back threes to open the second half, sparking a 13-3 UVU run over the first six minutes to cut the Wyoming lead to just two points, 42-40, with 14 minutes to play.
Asa McCord then knocked down a three at the 12:08 mark to give Utah Valley its second lead of the game, 45-44. UVU led 52-50 with 7:28 to play before Wyoming used an 17-3 run over the next 4:28 to take a 67-55 advantage with three minutes remaining. The two teams then played even the rest of the way as Wyoming secured the 74-62 win.
Aimaq scored his team-high 14 points on a 6 of 15 clip from the field. He also pulled down five rebounds with a pair of blocks. Ceaser scored eight points with seven rebounds in 24 minutes of play.
Jaden McClanahan scored a season-high eight points with a career-high five rebounds and four assists.
Blaze Nield and
Connor Harding each had seven points, while Darthard,
Tim Fuller, and McCord each tallied six.
Utah Valley shot a 46 percent clip from the field compared to Wyoming's 48.1 percent mark. The Cowboys just edged the Wolverines in rebounds, 31-28. The Wolverines shot 39.1 percent from long range with nine threes on the night. Wyoming hit 11 of 30 threes for a 36.7 percent mark.
Utah Valley now returns home to play Bethesda on Friday, Dec. 17. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the UCCU Center. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and ESPN 960 AM radio.
