St. George, Utah — Utah Valley University rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh to defeat the University of Montana, 4-3, at the Dixie State Classic on Friday at the Canyons Softball Complex. The Wolverines will also take on Utah State on Friday afternoon.
Basia Query went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, and
Siena Sandoval delivered the game-winning RBI in the seventh for the Wolverines (1-0) who won their season opener for the second straight year under head coach
Stacy May-Johnson.
Down 3-2 entering the seventh,
Madison Carr reached on an infield hit with one out, moved to second on a base hit up the middle by
Abby Doughty, and then scored the tying run when
Jade Miller singled to left. With two down and runners on the corners, Sandoval delivered the go-ahead RBI base hit to left, scoring Doughty.
Brooke Carter pitched six innings and surrendered three runs on six hits and struck out six to earn the win.
Devyn Cretz pitched around a pair of two-out walks and struck out a pair in the seventh to pick up the save.
Tristin Achenbach went the distance for Montana (1-5), allowing three earned runs (four total) on 10 hits and struck out seven.
Query led off the top of the second with a solo home run in the first at-bat of the season. She also drove in Doughty on a base hit to center in the third inning, giving UVU a 2-0 lead.
The Grizzlies got one back in the bottom of the third, on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Maygen McGrath. In the fifth, McGrath delivered a two-out, two-run home run to left that gave Montana a 3-2 lead. She came to the plate with two out and two on in the seventh inning but Cretz got her swinging to end the game.
