OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University shut out Weber State University, 5-0, in the night cap of a Wednesday doubleheader to earn a split after the Wildcats won 3-0 earlier in the day. Wolverine right-hander
Devyn Cretz struck out eight and allowed eight scattered hits without allowing a walk to pick up the complete-game win.
The Wolverines (8-11) did most of their offensive damage in the first inning, scoring four times, before adding a fifth run in the third on a
Rien Milliken home run, her third of the year.
In the first,
Basia Query led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat
Linnah Rebolledo.
Siena Sandoval walked and move to second when Milliken singled before both runners scored on a
Kyla Hardy double.
Aubree Hogan then drove in Hardy with a base hit to extend it to a 4-0 game.
Cretz retired the first nine batters she faced before back-to-back singles opened the fourth for the Wildcats (7-9). Weber State loaded the bases in the fifth with three singles but stranded all three runners, and did the same in the seventh, but were kept off the scoreboard. WSU stranded eight runners over the final four innings.
In the first game of the day, Weber State starter Kate Donaldson allowed just three hits to pick up the shutout for the Wildcats, who scored one in the first and two more in the fifth for some added insurance. Mia Rushton had two hits and scored two runs for the Wildcats, while Ashlyn Visser had a two-run single in the fifth.
Utah Valley will now travel to Missoula, Montana for a three-game series against the Grizzlies beginning with a Saturday doubleheader.
