LAS VEGAS, Nevada — After over 95 minutes of scoreless soccer, a penalty kick was the difference as UNLV picked up a 1-0 win over Utah Valley University on Friday night at Johann Memorial Field.

Joseph Wheelwright attempted to corral a ball lofted into the box but couldn't as it was contested by an opposing player and the ball slipped through his hands. Wheelwright's momentum and the player's position caused what UVU argued was incidental contact, but was whistled as a foul by the center official. That allowed the Rebels to get the winning PK, which was converted by Bailey Letherman.
Utah Valley drops to 1-2-0 on the season while UNLV improved to 2-2-2 with the golden goal win in the first overtime.
The Rebels finished with 12 shots, eight on goal, while the Wolverines had 10 shots, five on frame. UNLV was also whistled for 17 fouls, compared to six for Utah Valley.
Wheelwright finished with six saves in goal, including two in the 89th minute of the match that were able to force overtime.
The Wolverines return to Clyde Field for a Monday afternoon matchup against in-state foe Dixie State at 2 p.m. MT in the inaugural Old Hammer Rivalry game between the programs. The game was previously scheduled for March 13 in Orem but postponed due to weather and field conditions.
