Wolverines drop midweek game to Aggies

OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University saw its three-game win streak snapped as Utah State University avoided a season sweep against UVU with a 13-7 win on Wednesday at Wolverine Field.

The Aggies (11-21) did the bulk of their scoring with two outs, while also making four Wolverine (19-22) errors hurt. UVU got a three-run home run from Linnah Rebolledo during a five-run fourth inning to turn a nine-run deficit into an 11-7 game but could get no closer. Utah State scored nine of its 13 runs with two outs and also had seven runs score come in unearned.

Rebolledo and Basia Query had back-to-back doubles during two-run first inning for Utah Valley. Query's drove in Rebolledo before she and pinch-runner Brynne Hilton executed a double steal with runners at the corners to make it 2-0.

Utah State got four in the second and then added three more in the third on a two-out, bases-loaded triple from Kayla Fielder, who drove in four in the game. In the fourth, two Wolverine errors extended the inning before Lexi Orozco delivered with two outs and the bases full again, homering on the first pitch of the at-bat to give USU an 11-2 lead.

In UVU's half of the fourth, Peyton Prigge walked and Madison Carr singled with one out before Karleigh Olsen drove in Prigge with a base hit up the middle. It was one of two hits in the game for Olsen. Emery Nielson singled to short, scoring Carr, before Rebolledo hit the first pitch she saw out of the park, a no-doubter to left for her sixth home run of the year, also giving her a team-high 33 RBIs on the season.

The Aggies got to back in the top of the fifth while Delaney Hull came on in relief and retired the final 10 hitters she faced to keep UVU at bay. Hull earned a save after tossing 3.2 innings while Kapri Toone (4-10) picked up the win. Prior to Wednesday's game, Utah Valley had beaten Utah State twice earlier this season, 8-0 in St. George and 1-0 in Logan.

The Wolverines are off in this weekend and return to the field next Tuesday at 5 p.m. against BYU in the UCCU Crosstown Clash. Next weekend UVU will travel to New Mexico State in WAC play.
