GREENVILLE, N.C.—
Sadie Brockbank fired a shot into the back of the net in the 60th minute to lift the Utah Valley women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout win over Memphis in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Johnson Stadium. The win marks the first-ever NCAA Tournament team victory in any sport in UVU Athletics history.
"Before the match we talked about having to give everything that we have both mentally and physically in order to get the result because 99.9% wasn't going to do it," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "We thought that if for 90 minutes that we have a match where everybody buys in and is committed and willing to give everything that they have 100%, that it would be good enough. This is amazing. We had players on the field crying happy tears. That's fully committed and they deserve this."
Utah Valley (13-4-4) moves on to the NCAA Tournament's second round to take on sixth overall seed Arkansas on Saturday at 2 p.m. (MT) at Johnson Stadium on the East Carolina campus.
The Wolverines took the lead in the 60th minute as
Julianna Carter sent the ball to
Amber Tripp who then sent it into the box where Brockbank popped it over the Memphis keeper and into the back of the net for the score. The goal is the sixth goal of the season for Brockbank. It is the second goal scored in UVU's NCAA Tournament history.
Isabel Jones-Dawe and the UVU defense claim the team's 11th shutout of the season. Jones-Dawe tallied five saves in the 90 minutes.
Memphis (8-4) outshot Utah Valley 14-7 on the day, but the Wolverines won the shots on goal battle, 5-4.
Heather Stainbrook and Brockbank led UVU with three shots each. Tripp also had a shot.
Utah Valley will take on No. 6 Arkansas on Saturday at 2 p.m. (MT) in the tournament's second round at Johnson Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
