Nicole Ray and
Amber Tripp each scored a goal to lead Utah Valley in a 4-2 loss to No. 25 USC on Saturday night at Clyde Field.
The loss is Utah Valley's first setback of the season as the Wolverines fall to 3-1-0 on the season, while USC improves to 1-2 overall.
"Certainly, there was a lot of good to take away from this game and there are some details that we need to fix," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. Overall, I thought we possessed well. I thought we threw punches against a team that has won a couple of national championships and has a lot of fire power up front. We're going to have a short-term memory about this one and start focusing on getting a result at Utah State."
USC took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute as Croix Bethune sent a long lead pass to a streaking Savannah DeMelo who then kicked it into the right side of the net from the top of the box.
The Trojans scored again in the 22nd minute as Katie Roditis sent a cross into the box to Simone Jackson who gathered the ball and then shot it high into the net to give USC a 2-0 advantage.
Utah Valley cut into the lead in the 28th minute as
Nicole Ray sent a corner kick towards the goal line where a USC player directed it into the goal for the UVU goal. The own goal cut the lead to a 2-1 USC lead.
USC extended its lead in the 74th minute after Roditis sent a ball from the left side into the box where Aaliyah Farmer headed it into the goal to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead. The Trojans then scored again in the 86th minute as Farmer sent a lead pass down the field to Croix who sent the ball into the net to extend USC's lead to a 4-1 advantage.
Breanna DeWaal sent the ball over to
Amber Tripp who then dribbled up and fired a shot past the USC keeper to cut into the USC lead, 4-2.
USC outshot the Wolverines 11-10 on the night with UVU tallying a 7-6 advantage on frame. The Wolverines had five corner kicks to USC's two.
Heather Stainbrook and
Amber Tripp led UVU with three shots apiece.
Sadie Brockbank had two shots, while
Breanna Eves and Ray each had one.
Utah Valley will continue play on Friday, Sept. 3 against Utah State in Logan. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. UVU's next home match will be on Sept. 6 against San Jose State.
