Johnson and Nixon goals give UVU 2-1 win at Bradley

PEORIA, Ill. — A pair of goals after halftime propelled Utah Valley University to a 2-1 win at Bradley University on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Carter Johnson and Aaron Nixon both scored for the Wolverines, who moved to 3-0-2 with the win and wrapped up their final non-conference road trip of the season.

"The boys played our style of soccer throughout the game and showed their strong character again after going down a goal and battling back to win," said UVU head coach Kyle Beckerman. "I'm really proud of them and we're ready to get back to work and get ready for Thursday."

Bradley (1-4-0) scored first, on a 19th minute volley just outside the box off the right foot of Frances Pettinaroli and carried that 1-0 advantage into the break.

Johnson got the equalizer in the 57th minute, taking a feed from Jojea Kwizera at the top corner of the box to the far post and heading over the keeper for his second goal of the season. Erik Lyons also assisted on the goal.

The Wolverines kept the pressure on the Braves' back line, creating a flurry of decent looks before Nixon's second game-winner of the season. Diego Castillo sent a ball just past midfield forward to Alejandro Silva. Silva settled the ball and crossed it into the box to Nixon, in between a pair of defenders, and he scored on a header.

Bradley created a couple of quality looks in the final minutes, but Jason Smith, who was making his first career start, sent those back including one in the final minute of play. Smith finished the contest with three saves.

Utah Valley finished with 18 shots, six of which were on goal. Bradley had 10 shots, four on goal. The Wolverines had an 11-4 edge on total shots in the second half.

UVU moved to 3-0-0 all-time against Bradley and also matched the longest unbeaten streak to start the season, dating back to the 2015 WAC Championship team that started the season 5-0-0.

Next up for UVU is No. 3 Washington on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Clyde Field. Tickets are available at GoUVU.com/tickets.
