Wolverines stunned on golden goal from #3 Huskies

OREM, Utah — A golden goal less than four minutes into the first overtime period stunned Utah Valley University as No. 3 Washington picked up a 2-1 win on Thursday night at Clyde Field in front of 2,423 fans. The loss is the first of the season for the Wolverines, who dropped to 3-1-2, while the Huskies moved to 5-0-0.

Both teams scored their respective goals in regulation following penalty kicks. The Wolverines were called for a foul in the box, giving the Huskies a PK in the 19th minute. UVU goalkeeper Jason Smith made a diving save on the Achille Robin attempt, but a streaking Gabe Threadgold was able to rebound and poke it in to give Washington a 1-0 lead.

In the 28th minute, Evans Armah was fouled by the Washington keeper just inside the 18, giving Utah Valley a penalty kick. Diego Castillo converted the PK to tie the game at 1-1, giving him three goals on the season and tying him for the team lead with Aaron Nixon. It was the first time the Huskies had surrendered a goal since the 3:55 mark of their season opener, over 383 minutes of action. That tied the game at 1-1, where it stayed until the game-winner for the Huskies.

The decisive goal came in the 94th minute on a corner kick off the foot of Dylan Teves. Teves' ball found the head of Kendall Burks before Ryan Sailor finished it off with a header right in front of the goal mouth.

Making his second straight start in goal for Utah Valley, Smith collected four saves, with two of those coming on good Washington strikes in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Sam Fowler also had four saves for Washington, including a diving save on a header from Nixon early in the second half. Both teams were credited with 14 shots while the Huskies had six shots on goal to five for the Wolverines.

The game was the final non-conference contest for Utah Valley this season, and also was the 10th time UVU has hosted a Top 25 team. Utah Valley is now 4-4-2 against ranked opponents at home and 4-9-3 overall. The third-ranked Huskies are also the highest ranking ever for a UVU opponent. The Wolverines open WAC play next week an in-state foe Dixie State in the inaugural Old Hammer Rivalry match on Saturday, Sept. 25 in St. George, Utah.
