Wolverines shut out NM State, 2-0

OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University secured three points with a 2-0 win over New Mexico State University on Saturday night in WAC women's soccer. The game wrapped up Homecoming Week in front of a season-high 2,580 fans at Clyde Field.

The clean sheet was the second straight to open the conference season for the Wolverines (6-4-1, 1-0-0), the fourth individual shutout for goalkeeper Brooklyn Nielsen, and the team's sixth overall.

"It's a big focus for us, to try and get as many shutouts as possible," said UVU head coach Chris Lemay. "If we can do our job defensively, we feel like we're talented enough to find a couple of goals. I was really happy with our attacking attitude tonight. We were very dangerous getting forward in creating as many chances as we could and scored a couple of really nice goals. We're thrilled with the shutout and with three points and now we get prepared for Dixie State."

Utah Valley's first goal came in the 30th minute on a header from Nicole Ray. Julianna Carter played the ball forward to Sadie Brockbank and she lofted a perfect cross to the far post, where Ray snuck it past the keeper for her fourth goal of the season. The Aggies nearly got an equalizer in the 54th minute, but Nielsen made a diving save to her right to keep the shutout intact.

Brockbank gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute with her fifth goal of the season. Carter won a 50/50 ball and delivered it to Heather Stainbrook, who committed the defender and found Brockbank. Brockbank settled the pass with her left and then scored with her right into the lower left corner of the goal.

Utah Valley finished with 20 shots overall with 11 coming on goal, resulting in nine saves for NM State's Makenna Gottschalk. The Aggies finished with eight shots, two on goal.

The Wolverines will play just once next week, in the Old Hammer Rivalry against Dixie State. That match is set for Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. MT from Clyde Field.
