SEATTLE — On a cold, rainy night in Seattle, Richard Bedats' second-minute goal proved to be enough as the Utah Valley men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Seattle U Redhawks Friday night at Championship Field.
Bedats, the reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Week, opened the scoring just 90 seconds into the game off of a Seattle U counterattack to give the Redhawks a one-goal advantage that proved to stand the remainder of the match.
The Wolverines out-shot the Redhawks 16-9 and 6-4 on frame, but the stellar goalkeeping of Akili Kasim denied Utah Valley of some prime scoring opportunities.
"Sometimes you just have to tip your cap when a goalie plays out of his mind," said head coach Kyle Beckerman. "I thought we played them off the park for 75 minutes, but we weren't able to get the breaks we needed. We'll bounce back and get ready for our next game."
Ben Ortiz put the first shot on frame for the Wolverines in the 27th minute, but his curling shot was saved at the near post by Kasim.
Alejandro Silva tested Kasim at the far post in the 33rd minute, but the Redhawk keeper was able to push it out for a corner. Mark Andros used some nifty footwork to get space for a shot in the 34th, but his left-footed strike went wide.
The Wolverines had a pair of chances off the boot of Aaron Nixon in the 36th and 38th minutes, but both close-range efforts were sent just over the crossbar.
Abel Mendoza rattled the woodwork in the 59th minute when he vollied a shot off the near post. Andros had a look at goal in the 74th minute, but his shot was turned away at the goal line by a Redhawk defender.
Kasim made a pair of acrobatic saves to deny Knecht in the 83rd minute and Castillo in the 84th. Knecht's shot just inside the penalty area was parried away for a corner at the far post and Castillo's was pushed aside at the near post.
The Wolverines will continue their road swing with a trip to the Bay Area to take on the San José State Spartans on Sunday. Kickoff of that match is scheduled for 2 p.m. MDT and the match will be streamed on WAC International.
