SAN JOSÉ, Calif. — The Utah Valley men's soccer team out-shot San José State 12-8 and 5-1 on goal, but the Spartans made their one shot count as the Wolverines fell 1-0 on Sunday at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
The two sides were nearly inseparable for the first 45 minutes, but Anthony Guzman broke the deadlock in the 49th minute after he was sent through on goal by Beau Leroux following a defensive miscue for the lone goal of the match.
"We switched off for one play and we got punished for it," said head coach Kyle Beckerman. "We can still achieve our goals this year, so we have to brush off this loss quickly and get focused on getting a win next week at home."
The Spartans had a flurry of chances in front of the Wolverines' net in the 13th minute that resulted in a pair of blocked shots. One final shot found its way into the back of the net, but was called back for being offside.
Utah Valley nearly capitalized on a defensive miscue in the 33rd minute when Elijah Gozo dispossessed SJSU keeper David Sweeney on the left side of the penalty area, but Gozo's ensuing cross was unable to find the boot of a Wolverine to put it home.
Easton Embley registered the Wolverines' first shot on goal in the 55th minute that forced a diving save out of Sweeney. Abel Mendoza earned a free kick just outside the penalty area in the 84th minute. Alejandro Silva's free kick forced a lunging save out of Sweeney and Mendoza's follow-up was pushed out for a corner.
Carter Johnson headed another shot on goal in the 89th minute, but Sweeney got just enough on the save to turn it away.
The Wolverines return to Orem on Friday for the latest rendition of the Old Hammer Rivalry against Utah Tech. Kickoff from Clyde Field is scheduled for 6 p.m. MDT and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
