PALM DESERT, Calif. – The Utah Valley University women's golf team split a pair of match play rounds at the Mountain Classic Match Play at the Classic Club on Monday in Palm Desert, California. UVU first fell 2-1-2 to Portland State before responding with a 3-1-1 victory over Montana State to cap the day.
 
Freshman Leighton Shosted led the Wolverines on the day by winning both of her head-to-head battles. She first defeated Portland State's Windy Huang by a score of 3 and 1, before helping UVU defeat Montana State thanks to a 2-up victory over MSU's Kameryn Basye.
 
After being the lone Wolverine to win her round against PSU, Shosted was one of three UVU women's golfers to claim victory against MSU, as her teammates Bailey Henley and Caylyn Ponich also defeated their Bobcat counterparts to help UVU defeat Montana State. Both the senior Henley and the sophomore Ponich won their respective matches against MSU's Jordan Briggs and Sofia Rodriguez Todd by identical scores of 5 and 4. 
 
Reigning WAC champion Victoria Estrada also had a nice day for UVU by halving both of her rounds on the day. Estrada first tied PSU's Mariana Garcia Rosette thru 18 holes and followed it up by also tying MSU's Cora Rosanova. 
 
The UVU senior Henley also halved with PSU's Mckenna Maser during Monday's opening round. Lauren Taylor was also in action for UVU on Monday and she dropped her two rounds by scores of 4 and 2 and 7 and 4.
 
Ponich led UVU on the day in birdies with four, while Shosted followed with three.
 
The Wolverines will close the Mountain Classic Match Play on Tuesday morning against the Wyoming Cowgirls. UVU will begin teeing off at 8:54 a.m. MT/7:54 a.m. PT and live scoring can be followed by visiting GolfStat.com. The event will be UVU's lone match play scored tournament of the season and is being co-hosted by Boise State and Wyoming.
 
Following the conclusion of the event, the Wolverines will be off until March 7-8 when they'll head to McAllen, Texas to take part at the UTRGV Invitational at McAllen Country Club.
