Wolverines top Wyoming in final round at Mountain Classic

Bailey Henley, Victoria Estrada and Caylyn Ponich all picked up wins on the day to help UVU defeat the Cowgirls during Tuesday’s final round of match play by a score of 3-2 to place third at the event.

PALM DESERT, Calif. – Bailey Henley, Victoria Estrada and Caylyn Ponich all recorded victories on Tuesday in match play to help Utah Valley University women's golf defeat Wyoming by a score of 3-2 at the Mountain Classic Match Play at the Classic Club.

With the victory, UVU finishes the three-round match play scored event with a 2-1 record and a third-place finish at the event, as the Wolverines also defeated Montana State on Monday by a score of 3-1-1.

"I'm super proud of how the ladies fought today to win. There were some very close, tight matches," head UVU coach Juli Erekson said. "Bailey Henley played great golf to win early and both Caylyn and Vic battled until 18 in incredible winds to win."

The senior Henley defeated Wyoming's Jessica Zapf by a score of 5 and 4 on the day for her second victory over the tournament. In tightly contested matches, sophomores Estrada and Ponich both played well down the stretch to defeat UW's Samantha Hui and Michelle Nguyen, respectively by identical scores of 1-up.

Freshman Leighton Shosted and sophomore Lauren Taylor also took part in the event for the Wolverines, but both dropped their matches on Tuesday to Wyoming's Meghan Vogt and Morgan Ryan by respective scores of 5 and 3 and 2 and 1.

Over the three rounds, Henley, Ponich and Shosted all won two matches apiece to lead the way for the Wolverines at the match play event. The senior Henley also halved her other round as she played well all week. Estrada also won a round and halved two more as she too played well.

Estrada and Ponich paced the team in birdies at the event with five apiece while Shosted added four. Henley led the way in pars with 34 to finish second in that category at the match play tournament.

UVU also faced Portland State in match play on Monday and the Vikings managed to pull out a 2-1-2 victory for UVU's lone loss at the event.

The tournament marked UVU's only match play event of the season and was co-hosted by Wyoming and Boise State.

The Wolverines will be off until March 7-8 when they'll head to McAllen, Texas to take part at the UTRGV Invitational at McAllen Country Club. The SUU Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invite will then follow on March 10-12 in St. George, Utah.
