Softball returns to diamond at Dixie State Tournament

OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University softball returns to the diamond this weekend in a tournament at Dixie State University in St. George. The Wolverines (2-3) are slated to play Weber State once and both Nevada and Winthrop two times each. The games will be streamed on the WAC Digital Network.

UVU was off last week after COVID-19 protocols forced the team to sit out the UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas. The Wolverines haven't played since opening weekend when the team went 2-3 at the Lynn Russell Miller Classic at UC Riverside.

The weekend opens against in-state rival Weber State at 10 a.m. MT from Karl Brooks Field. The Wolverines will play the first of the two against Nevada on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. Saturday's slate has UVU facing the Wolf Pack again at 12:30 p.m. before a match up with Winthrop following the first game, at 3 p.m. The weekend concludes on Sunday at 10 a.m. contest against Winthrop.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley picked up a pair of wins over Pacific in the tournament at UC Riverside during the opening weekend of play. New head coach Cody Thomson's first career win came against the Tigers on Feb. 12 in a game that Thomson's daughter, Mikaela, homered. Megan Gibbs, who had a big weekend in her first career action, went 4-for-4.

In the Wolverines' second win of the weekend, Jaeden Barajas hit a home run and UVU had a two-out rally with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off the weekend with a win. Four straight hits helped UVU to the win. Madison Carr had an RBI base hit to tie it and Thomson won it with an RBI single that scored Carr.

Gibbs had a big weekend, going 8-for-16 with two home runs, two doubles and four RBIs. In the circle, Katie Zuniga earned both wins and posted a 1.24 ERA over 11.1 innings of work.

UP NEXT
Utah Valley will head to Colorado next week with seven games scheduled against four different teams. A slight schedule change has the Wolverines opening play on Thursday, March 3 against Northern Colorado in a doubleheader in Greeley. The following day, UVU will begin the Colorado Classic with games against Northern Colorado, Wisconsin, Colorado State, and Saint Mary's. The first two games will be played in Greeley before the Wolverines will face Colorado State and Saint Mary's in Fort Collins.
